Get started with songwriting with these online resources. I've scoured the web and regularly use these myself and direct my students to them for inspiration, exercises, and contests.
Enjoy, and let me know if I missed a good one!

The Artist as Citizen Conference, New York City
Deadline to apply: May 15, 2014
The Artist as Citizen Conference is presented byArtists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), an NYC-based non-profit that connects performing and visual artists with underserved youth in the US and around the world. Founded in 2005 by Broadway Musical Director Mary-Mitchell Campbell and some of her students at Juilliard, ASTEP was conceived to transform the lives of children using the most powerful tool they had – their art. Appropriately, the conference will be hosted by The Juilliard School, and borrows its name and founding principles from a book by Juilliard’s current president, Dr. Joseph Polisi. In The Artist as Citizen, Dr. Polisi argues that “there should be no dividing line between artistic excellence and social consciousness.” This belief is fundamental to ASTEP’s mission and serves as the animating principle for the conference. The Artist as Citizen Conference will take place June 2nd – June 6th, 2014.

Bobby Apperson Music Studio is proud to announce MusiCamp LA, Los Angeles Summer Camps for Young Pianists and Budding Musicians!
In partnership with Young Musicians (Ashlee Young, Owner) and hosted at the Lyric-Hyperion Theater & Cafe in Silverlake, MusiCamp LA will provide musical guidance and group activities for elementary and middle school ages.
Bobby Apperson and Ashlee Young, founders and hosts of MusiCamp LA, are two award-winning pianists with a diverse interest in music. Apperson and Young founded MC-LA to extend vital arts education during the summer months for children who love (or you think will love!) music of all kinds.
MusiCamp LA is a new summer day camp, Monday through Friday 9-2 in the heart of Silverlake, Los Angeles. Sessions are in June, July and August 2014 at the Lyric-Hyperion Theater & Cafe, where your child will learn new music skills, make new friends, and have fun!
Activities include group performance, team-building, ear training and music theory, studying songwriting and music history, and much more!
Please see www.musiCampLA.org for much more including online registration and information about our guest artists, recital, and sessions during each of the summer months in 2014. We'll see you on stage!
Whether your child is the next Beyonce or more likely to sing her solos in the shower, she is bound to benefit from some form of music education. Research shows that learning the do-re-mis can help children excel in ways beyond the basic ABCs.
